From the archives...Still Life With Pears.

Picture 30
At a recent art fair I ran into some lovely customers that I have not seen in quite awhile. This is a commissioned painting that I created for them back in 2004: "Still LIfe With Pears". I started drawing still life compositions at an art retreat with my friends Erica Huntzinger and Rachel Weaver-Rivera in 2001...that was the start of a whole series of new work. Tomorrow I head up to WI for another long over due art retreat weekend with them. It's exciting to know that some other new theme may develop on this trip so many years later...

Back from paradise

Rich and I took a long weekend trip out to see my brother and his wife in Washington State at their beautiful lakeside cabin in the mountains. We had a great time: lots of relaxation, amazing food and kayaking...!  Picture 11
My two favorite guys...next to my new favorite lake: Wenatchee
Picture 14
Rich found this fossilized rock on the beach...
Picture 32
I'm a big fan of the duo impromptu self shot photo...my brother Carl & I have been taking these for years...we have such a good time together if only we didn't live so far apart...
Picture 35
of course Rich managed to find the one musical instrument on the premises!
Picture 24
Kicking back, watching beautiful blue striped dragon flies..little did I know that a short time later I would be a crazy lady caught up in a paddling frenzy trying to escape a swarm of mosquitos!
Picture 33
Happy hiking family...Linda & Carl with my smiling canine nephew, Willy!
 Picture 36
The offerings at the Plain "Farmer" Market...this was a fun joke as there is only one farmer at the Plain Farmer's Market. We enjoyed these beets and fuschia colored carrots for dinner...served up with a side of goat cheese. Yum. I had never seen carrots of this color before, the farmer said they were "speciated".

Dogs Rule Art

Picture 14This was the secret project I blogged about the other day...I was asked by Jill  Beninato of www.sitstaysmile.com to be part of a 'fat book' called 'Dogs Rule'. "Fat books" are small books of a certain size that contain pages created by a pre-determined group of artists. They are called fat books because the pages are often embellished with ephemera that make the final book fat when it is bound. Embellishment is optional... Since I was really stretched for time I couldn't take the risk of trying something new...instead I stuck with what I do best. That's Alice with my 14 pages...all original paintings on matte board, a lot of work but it was fun! There are 13 other amazing artists who will contribute, we each get a book filled with pages from one another and the 14th one will be auctioned off on ebay with the proceeds going to artist Bernie Berlin's charity A Place To Bark please visit her links to find out about the amazing work she is doing to save homeless pets, rehab them and find them homes (she is a remarkable human being and artist). Stay tuned for more info on the auction & finished books!

Magnificent View...

Picture 33 ...from the Magnificent Mile - had a wonderful show over the weekend here in Chicago. Met people from all over the world...one of my pieces is on it's way to a new home in Slovakia! Great weather and wonderful artists all around me. This was the view from behind my booth...that's the new Trump Tower obstructing the view behind the Wrigley Building (which always was so beautiful to see with it's white facade against the brilliant blue sky...oh well, maybe Mr. Trump will buy one of my large cityscapes for his new Tower!)

Picture 34I just bought these spiffy new bamboo-ish rugs for my booth at CostPlus...Adds a nice touch...what do you think?

Canine Muses...

Picture 22And you wonder why I paint dogs...this photo is a perfect example.

If you don't have one (or more)...I encourage you to adopt one as soon as possible. Not only will it make every day of your life that much sweeter but there are a tremendous number of homeless pets waiting in shelters at this very minute. Yesterday alone, Chicago Canine Rescue (Alice's Guardian Angels) received over 200 requests to take in destitute animals throughout the Midwest. Many are coming from the flood zone, animal hoarder situations, and from Tennessee where the HSUS seized over 700 animals from a puppy mill. They desperately need adopters and foster homes so they can help more dogs. Wherever you are there are animals waiting for homes and you can find them quickly at PetFinder.com. This little gal could be yours, she is waiting for you at Chicago Canine Rescue:

Lost in Translation...German Pet Portrait Press!

Waz I am represented by The Dogs-Gallery (Ihr Hund Als Kunstwerk) in Germany, they just sent me this press clipping from "location-magazin" of the WAZ in Essen. They also mentioned a new connection with a gallery in Berlin...so perhaps soon I'll be painting more European Pups...!

Feed Your Soul With Art...

Picture 5 Today during what I like to call 'productive procrastination' I decided to clean out the 'drafts' folder in my email program...I found many forgotten little notes to myself: Some reference people or companies I would like to do business with (in most cases I had actually written an email to send to them, then chickened out, these have been waiting all this time for me to muster courage) other ones reference artists who I would like to meet and that I found particularly inspiring ... Mary Jones is one of those, this piece is called "Betty", her paintings are so detailed and fun. She has a very clever, whimsical view of the world. So instead of deleting emails I ended up taking a delightful visual cyber trip and then a nice bike ride to the lake. Newly inspired I'm now back to work!

No Passing: Red, White and Blue

Rwb I created this painting titled "No Passing" at the Fields Project last month, I wrestled with the border color...too much Red, White and Blue. By my own rule and aesthetic I've always stayed away from using primary colors together like this: Rule Broken...it seems appropriate to show this painting on the 4th of July... 2605941637_5e8f6d8a5c

Chicago Dog Magazine Feature!

Picture 4

I'm very excited to be a featured Pet Portrait Artist in the premiere issue of Chicago Dog Magazine! My paintings of Oliver, Scruffles and Nel were the editor's picks...this is Oliver's second feature in a national dog magazine, he was also my featurted portrait in Modern Dog Magazine.

The Sunnier Side of the Weekend...

The weekend was not all devastation and destruction...I got to catch up with some of my wonderful customers and friends that I had not seen in awhile and I met many new ones...not too mention several adorable canines...
Picture 3

This is Boomer with his new Anne Leuck Feldhaus Mounted Print!

Picture 4 And this is the very talented Katie Korroch of Katiedid Studio - it was so fun to meet her and her husband Bob in person...and she is the mother of the fabulous Kate Korroch...artist and art helper extraordinaire! I had the added pleasure of a studio visit from Kate & Katie today...(of course I forgot to snap a photo) I feel very lucky to have met these two fantastic artists and clever women with whom I happen to share a certain design aesthetic...we could have talked all day and night, and into the next week I'm sure!

Picture 19This little gal is Zoe....her owner purchased this Box Print from me at the One of A Kind Show & Sale (last December) and brought her to the Evanston Art Fair so I could meet her...she was a little sweetie pie.

microburst....

PRE They came around and told us a bad storm was coming and that we had about 10 minutes to get our tents and things secure before it hit.

4-19PM 4:19 PM
It was the scariest storm I've ever been through. I was very lucky my tent and work survived undamaged - 40 of the 220 booths at the show were either destroyed or damaged, people were injured and taken to the hospital. They say it was a microburst...I watched in horror (through a zippered opening as I held onto my tent with all my might) to see tents, tables, art and debris flying through the air tossed and tumbling out of control from the west on Chuch Street  and then turning south onto Sherman wiping them out as well (I was 3 booths in on the north east side of  Sherman).
Devastation Picture 18 Several people I know lost their entire set ups and some their artwork as well. We all tried to pitch in and help our friends clean up and find their things...my friend Kate Strong of Strong Wear lost her tent but we were able to salvage much of her display and work. More photos on my flickr page...
Kate                                                                                         5:02 PM
A short hour later the skies opened up again and this time the hail came! Eva & I had just finished helping Kate retrieve her display and hats and things and she had just covered them up with a tarp when round 2 started...this was like a picnic compared to the microburst!  Kate bravely came back on Sunday with an old tent she said "I decided it would be better to just get back on the horse" ...she is one tough chick!

Rich came up and rescued me, while walking to the car to come home, we came by Nancy & Andy of Circa Ceramics and Eva (again helping out her friends) packing up...they lost one shelf of product but other than that made it through safely...we all counted ourselves very lucky!

Picture 15So I couldn't figure out why my arms were so sore yesterday...then I realized I had been hanging onto the steel pole of my awning for dear life for ? 17 minutes on Saturday...As I was writing this I received a phone call from Bob Seidenberg at the Evanston Review Newspaper who asked my for my take on the storm. And here's a link to a video newscast about the storm damage at the Evanston Fountain Square Art Festival.

Double Vision...

Picture 2These cooling towers are the ever present landmarks in Ogle County...I * Dr. Seuss-ified them. It's pretty bizarre, they creep their way into so many lovely vistas...and in spite of what they are and the way people feel about them..."it is what it is" so I chose to make peace with that fact and appreciate the beauty of the way they change color in different light and the way the steam  undulates out of them depending on the direction of and the amount of wind.

* My style is surely inspired by Dr. Seuss...We had a huge collection of his books (a garage sale gift from Nana & Aunt Susie) ...some favorite memories are of my Dad reading me those books at bedtime...he is a very good story teller. The first book I ever read cover to cover was "Green Eggs and Ham"...and one of my favorites stories was about the Star-Bellied Sneetches.Picture 3

Back from the farm...

Picture 32 And just like that it's over....was it a dream? A beautiful week of blue skies, big puffy white clouds, endless gorgeous hilly back country roads, cows, pigs, goats and corn. I wish I could hold on to this feeling of completeness and happiness. No tv, no computer, a lot of times no phone (my outdoor studio at Castle Rock State Park had no cell phone reception). But it wasn't all sunny skies for me. I had some very real creative challenges and no where to run away from them...I seriously considered driving back to Chicago one morning. But I stayed and battled it out with myself and am very happy with the few pieces that I finished...I think what I accomplished out there mentally in a week would have taken me 3 months here in my studio with all its distractions.

The other magic that happens as an artist at a program like this is you are PRESENT the WHOLE time, I mean visually and creatively, MENTALLY PRESENT. Everywhere I went and every road I traveled I was scanning the amazing lush green vistas all around me...appreciating every field, cow, pig and hay bale..stopping, sketching, taking photos.

The community and group of folks that make up this organization (The Fields Project) are so amazing, they are like a second family after my 3 different years of participation in the program. I also met a group of wonderful artists from around the country and a few right here in Chicago (I had this silly idea that I knew all the aritsts in Chicago!)

The field sculptures this year were so vivid and beautiful thanks to a new grass field and all the rain of the past few weeks. Another huge highlight was Cathi Bouzide & Danny Mansmith's collaboration on the wrapped corn bin. PHENOMENAL!

I'll post more photos and notes soon but in the mean time I did upload my photos to my FLICKR page so please check them out.Picture 23

Urban House Bird Painting...Live

Urbanbirdhouse

I created this painting and video (below) on Tuesday for Chicago House's annual Bird House Auction to be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art on June 19th, 2008. Sorry I'll miss it but I'll be at a bonfire on the Bocker Farm...! "Urban House Bird" Acrylic on wood cabinet door. © 2008 Anne Leuck Feldhaus. See my donations from previous years here.

Green Thumbs...not yet but my fingers are crossed...

Picture 23Well after 2 back to back weekends of art fairs and all the loose ends I need to tie up before heading to the Fields Project on Saturday, I have no business going out and buying flowers but I had to. Last year all I had  on the deck was an azaela bush (which stopped flowering the week after I bought it). I need to see some color when I look out the window and the sooner I get these into pots and settled the sooner I have more color, right? (My thumbs are a fleshy shade of pink, no green in site). Mom, you know I wish you could snap your fingers and be here to guide me! My Mother and her husband Bill grow the most beautiful gardens around their home in the woods...I paint with acrylics, she paints with flowers. (...And Rich is taking care of the vegetable portion of our petite urban farm).

Warrick's Sweet Dreams

70finalWarrick

Just finished this commissioned pet portrait of Warrick for my  wonderful  clients Julie & Brittany. He is dreaming of things he loves: taking walks and his beloved owners. If you are interested in ordering, visit AnnesArt.com or my Pet Portrait Blog.....Have a great day!

Hot, Hot, Hot Kansas City!

Village_Art_2008 We are back from Kansas City...the weather was great...but too HOT for the likes of me. Luckily I was next to my pal Laura Nugent who took good care of me with a nice big cooler full of ice and other select beverages. We met lots of wonderful people and many new customers. I also met some great artists, Andrew Johnson, aka the Stitch Maestro who won best of show in his category and was this year's poster artist. I love his whimsical style (I know you are very surprised I would like this kind of art!). More artists to be introduced in a future post.

Picture 22Laura & I goofing after a long HOT day.

Picture 20Look's like I have my new booth shot for 2008 (minus the 10)...& all lit up...Picture 21Now busy with paper work, finishing commissions, running errands, off to the vet in an hour with Izzerloo...

Crunch Time...

Picture 17 Phew...after we loaded the truck, I came in and finished 2 more paintings...this is a close up of a tiny portion of one of them. We hit the road tomorrow morning for the Prairie Village Art Fair this weekend in Kansas City. I've been in SUPER ANNE mode which is neccessary to produce my Newsletter before heading out of town and pull everything together for the first show of the season: (getting my booth display and equipment all back together, packing paintings, figuring out what stays and what goes and how to hang it. Making price tags, getting portfolios, credit card machine, receipt books, mailing list, bags, weights, and my brand new front Awning  for my Tent....woo hoo: additional shade!).

It's almost a relief to just focus on one part of my business for a week....I've always felt that if I just chose one direction I could be really successful (and probably more sane) but for some reason I feel the need to be involved in all these different facets of art: the Art Fairs, Pet Portraits, Illustration, Licensing, Wholesale, my Design work for Animal Welfare Groups...did I forget anything? Some day I would love to have a business manager that facilitates all that 'stuff' so I could just do the creative part...know anyone like that?

Picture 20
Also edited and uploaded another video clip - this one is of me painting a recent pet portrait of Dudley & Murphy (above) for Stacy of ZuZuPetals. You can watch it on my Pet Portrait Blog It's actually easier to upload video to Blogger than to Typepad...go figure.

Thursday in the studio...live

As I mentioned the other day, I've been using Gawker to capture my live painting sessions in the studio....the hard part is the editing with imovie and then getting all of that to show up here, Typepad had good instructions. Kate and Rich and of course Lynda.com have both taught me a lot...I'm using Viddler.com to host the video. So here goes the first one: Music: "Run On" by Moby from Play:The B Sides

Trip #2...

Picture 3We had a nice litle trip to Milwaukee...we ate at a few of our old favorite places, toured the neighborhoods that Rich lived in and visited the Milwaukee Art Museum where I was very inspired by the works of:John Wilde, Alan Davie, Milton Avery (painting below), Edgar Tolson (sculpture below) and Gabriele Munter.
 Milwaukeequad08
Top photo...sketching on the drive up on Sunday, you'll notice this is one of those sketch book pages that has to span 3 days..that's what happens when I get behind. Snapshots from the trip below:  Conejito's Place where they serve your enchiladas on a paper plate...no muss no fuss. Tasted just like I remembered and I don't think they've raised the price in the last 17 years.
Picture 6   Picture 5
Sorry to mix the food with the art, Typepad has me using a new beta site that is making it very tricky to layout the images with the text. Have to see if  I can get my old  format back.3cm429

Picture 9 That's Rich in front of Sydney HiH...the building where we met. His band the Psycho Bunnies had a practice space (where he was living very primitively!) and they often played in a bar in the basement called The Unicorn. It looks like Sydney Hih's days are now numbered. Other treats...Kopps Frozen Custard...Butter Pecan..mmmm. These cows overlook the parking lot. A fun little get away..I've been playing serious catch-up after excursions 2 weeks in a row. Suddenly my show in Kansas City is only a week away! It will be a working weekend for me...but I'm looking forward to it!

We Did...10 Years Ago Today

Ido
On a Tuesday morning, 10 Years ago today Rich & I got married on the shore of Lake Michigan by Reverend Lee, who we found in the Yellow Pages.  This was our fun little announcement that we made from photo booth pictures..it was an elopement. We have been together since meeting in January of 1991 in Milwaukee. I cannot tell you where the last 17+ years have gone, it's been like a blink of an eye. So we are off to Milwaukee for a long over do little overnight visit to celebrate this 10th Anniversary. Big Love to You Baby...I wouldn't be living this big wonderful art life without you, your never ending support and voice of reason!

Kohler Art Adventure...

On Monday I took this first of many trips I will be taking in the next 5-6 months if you include all the art fairs. I often feel like a shut-in working from my home studio but suddenly the season changes and my world opens up. I love a road trip...especially when someone else is driving!
Jmkacwomensrestroom

My first adventure was earlier this week when I took a long overdue trip up to the Sheboygan/Kohler/Manitowoc area to visit my dear friend Erica Huntzinger.Picture_5_2 She works as a teacher at the the wonderful John Michael Kohler Art Center and has also recently become involved in their Arts Industry Program which brings artists to the Kohler Factory for residencies. I love this museum, it is just the right size and they show such an eclectic mix of artists. The wonderful surprise here is all the bathrooms, each designed by a different resident artist. The Women's Room shown above has all these exquisite corpse tiles and each sink and toilet bowl is also adorned with art.

Photo on the left Erica & Daniel choosing the spot to plant a new tree. Daniel is an arborist among his many other talents!

After our tour we lunched at the yummy Field to Fork, hiked around their home in rural Cleveland, WI. (that used to be a cheese factory!) and had a lovely bonfire that night. The photo below is a peek at the cheese factory from over the hill:

Picture_19
On Tuesday morning we took an extensive 3 hour tour of the Kohler Factory. It was amazing, unfortunately cameras were not allowed so all I have is a photo from  Destinationkohler.com. I encourage you to take the tour if you get the chance. Our guide, Joe, was was fantastic. He worked there his whole life, and has been a tour guide for the last 20 years in his retirement. We were able to also take a peek at what the resident artists were working on, they have the opportunity to work in the Pottery, Iron and Brass Foundries, and Enamel Shop. Kohler_factory_banner

After the tour we had the most amazing brunch at Whispering Orchards....1674547079_0aeb7639e01_2
Strawberry Ruhbarb French Toast! Fed the goats and mules then later hiked down to Lake Michigan and collected lots of great rocks.

Then visited Daniel at the Cleveland Post Office...a really sweet small town place where the postage has also gone up only one cent. Of course they were out of one cent stamps!

Picture_20

Finished up with a tour of the area, saw lots of great birds, a yellow finch and this is a red winged blackbird on the sign. I had not seen one since doing my field sculpture last summmer.

Picture_16
It was a wonderful little get-away...now back to real life: Trying to catch up in the studio!Picture_10
