We Did...10 Years Ago Today

Ido
On a Tuesday morning, 10 Years ago today Rich & I got married on the shore of Lake Michigan by Reverend Lee, who we found in the Yellow Pages.  This was our fun little announcement that we made from photo booth pictures..it was an elopement. We have been together since meeting in January of 1991 in Milwaukee. I cannot tell you where the last 17+ years have gone, it's been like a blink of an eye. So we are off to Milwaukee for a long over do little overnight visit to celebrate this 10th Anniversary. Big Love to You Baby...I wouldn't be living this big wonderful art life without you, your never ending support and voice of reason!

Kohler Art Adventure...

On Monday I took this first of many trips I will be taking in the next 5-6 months if you include all the art fairs. I often feel like a shut-in working from my home studio but suddenly the season changes and my world opens up. I love a road trip...especially when someone else is driving!
Jmkacwomensrestroom

My first adventure was earlier this week when I took a long overdue trip up to the Sheboygan/Kohler/Manitowoc area to visit my dear friend Erica Huntzinger.Picture_5_2 She works as a teacher at the the wonderful John Michael Kohler Art Center and has also recently become involved in their Arts Industry Program which brings artists to the Kohler Factory for residencies. I love this museum, it is just the right size and they show such an eclectic mix of artists. The wonderful surprise here is all the bathrooms, each designed by a different resident artist. The Women's Room shown above has all these exquisite corpse tiles and each sink and toilet bowl is also adorned with art.

Photo on the left Erica & Daniel choosing the spot to plant a new tree. Daniel is an arborist among his many other talents!

After our tour we lunched at the yummy Field to Fork, hiked around their home in rural Cleveland, WI. (that used to be a cheese factory!) and had a lovely bonfire that night. The photo below is a peek at the cheese factory from over the hill:

Picture_19
On Tuesday morning we took an extensive 3 hour tour of the Kohler Factory. It was amazing, unfortunately cameras were not allowed so all I have is a photo from  Destinationkohler.com. I encourage you to take the tour if you get the chance. Our guide, Joe, was was fantastic. He worked there his whole life, and has been a tour guide for the last 20 years in his retirement. We were able to also take a peek at what the resident artists were working on, they have the opportunity to work in the Pottery, Iron and Brass Foundries, and Enamel Shop. Kohler_factory_banner

After the tour we had the most amazing brunch at Whispering Orchards....1674547079_0aeb7639e01_2
Strawberry Ruhbarb French Toast! Fed the goats and mules then later hiked down to Lake Michigan and collected lots of great rocks.

Then visited Daniel at the Cleveland Post Office...a really sweet small town place where the postage has also gone up only one cent. Of course they were out of one cent stamps!

Picture_20

Finished up with a tour of the area, saw lots of great birds, a yellow finch and this is a red winged blackbird on the sign. I had not seen one since doing my field sculpture last summmer.

It was a wonderful little get-away...now back to real life: Trying to catch up in the studio!Picture_10

Learned Something New...!

I signed up at the last minute and took a Silk Screen Class at the Needle Shop in Bucktown on Sunday. I scrambled to find some images and something to print on. The class was only 4 hours so I really only had time to make my screens and about 3 prints. I did purchased some ink and a squeegee so I can practice at home. The most difficult thing to me about this process (so far) is working in the dark to get the image on the screen (can you tell I've never taken a photography class?)...the small amount of light you do get is red. Our teacher, Tiffany Paige said that Chicago Silk Screen is a great resource for all supplies and they even burn screens from your files if need be.
Picture_21_2
These are the screens I made and the one below the shirt I printed on. I'd like to try incorporating silk screen into my painting process so I can apply to shows in the mixed media category...a lot fewer people apply in mixed media than painting. Tomorrow I'll tell you about the first of many upcoming trips I'll be taking over the next few months.

KC ...my afternoon at the easel

Picture_11
We head to Kansas City at the end of this month to do the Prairie Village Art Show. I was very happy to be one of the 90 artists selected from over 600 that applied. In conjunction with my new road trip series of paintings I also want to create similar works that encompass  places & landmarks of specific cities and neighborhoods (stay tuned for Chicago neighborhoods this summer!). Talented artist & my good friend Laura Nugent (who resides in KC and will also be exhibiting at the show) supplied me with a list of such items and with the added help of google images for reference I created this composition. I even taped it's creation with a webcam but you'll have to wait on that as I'm still challenged when it comes to editing. And of course I must finish this painting, (which I am confident I will do soon) now that I have this ability to document it. Curious? I'm using Gawker.

Proposed Orphan Works Bill

We (artists, illustrators, photographers, designers) need your help!

There is a bill in the senate called The Orphan Works Act of 2008. It will endanger the rights of anyone who creates intellectual property.

It will expose your art to commercial infringement. It will include work from professional paintings to family snapshots. It will include published and unpublished work. It will include any image that resides or has ever resided on the internet. It will force you to register every picture you do with privately-held commercial registries. It will make all unregistered works potential orphans.

This radical change to U.S. copyright law will shift the burden of diligence from infringer's to rights holders. It is wrong to give infringer's the right to make money from your property without your knowledge or consent. You should not have to pay businessmen to keep the work you’ve created. The Illustrators Partnership of America has made it very easy for you to contact your representatives.

Take Action: Don't Let Congress Orphan Our Work

2 minutes is all it takes, click to write Congress and protect your copyright:

Just click "Take Action" under each bullet and you can quickly make your voice heard. I just sent to all the links and it really takes very little time. PLEASE take a moment and do the same.

Joanne Fink gives a very good description here of what art licensing is and what this bill will do to artists who make a living from licensing and selling their work: illustrators, designers, artists.

My Fleet of Trucks and a Bus!

Picture_11

Picture_12
Picture_14
Amazingly, the trucks are all close to the same scale even though I made them independent of one another. The bus below is another story...it's way bigger than the trucks - of course it will shrink a bit when it goes through the bisque firing. It's a strange bus, I had 3 different images in my head and I kind of morphed them altogether in the clay.

Picture_16

Now I have lots of glazing to do...that's the hard part! It's not like painting with acrylics. Many coats are needed to get the saturation that I like and even then the underglazes can do strange things in the kiln. Stay tuned!

Bullseye II

Picture_20_2
Bullseye II...30"x30". This recently completed painting chronicles the pain of my typical migraine headache. My pain is generally targeted behind one eye. I developed the sketch for this one back in 2003 for an annual migraine art contest the National Headache Foundation used to sponsor and finally got around to painting it full size. The NHF gave me a merit award for Bulls Eye I, and you can see a few more of my migraine paintings here. Belowblade70dpi_2

And this one: "Below the Blade" is also migraine related. That little circular saw blade over her neck signify's wanting to chop my head off...a lot of pain and stiffness radiates through my neck & shoulders during these headaches too. I feel very fortunate that over the years I have found medication and a combination of things that make them much more manageable for me. The sketch for this one was not as happy go lucky as this painting appears!

Using My Art to Help Our Furry Friends

Picture_12

Tree House Animal Foundation has their Annual Stray Cat Strut on Sunday, May 4th. I created the design for this Annual Fundraising Event. These folks know kitty cats and they do such good work to find homes and improve the lives of so many of Chicago's homeless felines and other animals too.

Bekind07 Chicago Animal Care & Control Will be using my banner design again for Be Kind To Animals Week, May 4-10, 2008. The banners will hang at Chicago's City Hall in the Loop.

Other Pet Welfare Events Going on this weekend:

Our 112 year old frame house finally has insulation! They actually blew it into the walls from outside...only took one day. That hose is pretty wild, you could see as the fibers shot through it and all the pictures on the wall shook as the walls filled up. It's already quieter in here and now we won't freeze from all the drafts in the winter and hopefully avoid sizzling in the summer. Better conditions for making art!

Artists Found on FLickr

Picture_16_2I just found another wonderful artist..this time on Flickr. This ceramic piece "large head with avocado" is by Kim Murton of Washington state. She also has great illustrations and 2d work on her Flickr site. I found her on a flickr group...yes, I'm finding that all these sites have multi-layered networking capabilities.

It's one thing to know there are many talented artists out there but now with sites like etsy and flickr you suddenlty realize you have no clue...you are just skimming a little corner of an endless, awesome pool of amazing talent, creativity and cleverness. And those are just the sites I'm referencing...there are a gazillion others that I
don't even know about as well as all the amazing illustration artist sites (but that's a whole other post). Here are some I know about and a few I belong to:

Art Girls Pot Leuck April 2008

Picture_14
Last Wednesday I hosted the monthly Art Girls Pot Luck or Leuck as I call it when it's at my house. It was a lovely evening with great food and fun conversation. Picture_10_2It was also Mary Laskey's birthday which we celebrated with a yummy cake brought by Eva May from the Swedish Bakery! (yes that's silly Eva with her tongue out!)

See more photos from the party on my flickr page.

Red + Pink

Picture_12_4

I had to get a picture of Kate in her pink and red outfit with Dot (the handmade/hand stitched character I made that one day you will see in a book!)...they match pefectly! Art work on the left ...kitty cat "Yoda" by outsider artist Cher Shaffer and a piece from art girl pal Mimi Damrauer's Bulls Eye series.

Banner Art for my Blog..Finally!

Putting a custom banner with my artwork has been on my to do list for a long time...although I kind of liked the clean simplicity of just the sold blue banner with white text. Picture_10_2 But then I always felt pressure to have an image of my work visible in my posts so people could see my work/know that I am an artist..you know, I'm always wearing that marketing hat!

So aside from that, I've procrastinated for the usual reasons:

*Didn't know how to do it, Kathy Frey emailed me some pointers back in February

*Wouldn't take the time to investigate further, until today.

*I found myself upgrading my account because the buttons Kathy told me to look for were not there! No wonder I couldn't figure it out before (I've been blogging since November of 2005!)

*Couldn't decide on the design, what imagery to include, text etc.

So this is it for now..until I come up with something better. Which I will...but now I have to also design all the other things that normally come with a pre-designed template, text color, link colors, borders...too much for today. I'm also thinking of having 2 columns on either side as well, any opinions out there? For now I'm just going to cross that "blog banner art" item off my to do list and be glad!

PS I also updated my menu bar on my website...more white: cleaner...do you like it better than the old one? see below.

  Picture_8

this was the old menu bar...dark and I thought I should refresh the logo image.

My New Friend Lynda!

Picture_7
I just made a great new friend and she's really SMART!  For $25 a month Lynda.com gives you full access to online training for almost any application out there. I am self taught on 99% of the software that I use, making things really complicated at times. I heard about this site quite awhile ago and realized how silly it was to put off signing up. What I learned today alone will cover my $25 for the month, I finally figured out how to make downloadable pdf files for my Pet Portrait Order Forms in Adobe GoLive. Yay! The teachers are very thorough and even make a few jokes along the way. I can't wait to explore and solve some of my problems with Illustrator and Photoshop and to add Forms to my website on GoLive. Learning is so much fun when you have a good teacher! And you only pay for what you need, I can just unsubscribe at the end of the month if I've had all my questions answered. Pretty cool.

Pounce

My normally productive procrastination has gone to the wayside. I am addicted to etsy's POUNCE search feature. You can click and see all the most recently sold items...the hot list! Etsy is this amazing never ending cornucopia of beautiful handmade items and art and shops to explore. Here are a few of my most recent favorite items (in case anyone wants to buy me a gift!):

Murphy & Dudley Digital Sketch

Picture_32
In case you all think I've stopped painting I thought I would mention that I am working on several commissions. Most are in the sketch stage but this is the one I'm about to paint. My customer is Stacy of ZuZu Petals, they design adorable invitations, stationery and note pads. This is going to be a happy memory painting of her family's beloved hounds Murphy & Dudley. Dudley used to smile with all his teeth...It's a fun composition and I love the colors she chose. If you are interested in a Pet Portrait please visit my website! you can also see examples on my Pet Portrait Blog.

Cougar brings Helicopters...

Picture_30
On Monday night as I pedaled my bike up to the Lill Street Art Center I noticed 2 helicopters hovering stationary over the same spot in Roscoe Village for quite awhile. Had no idea what was going on but thought, hmm...maybe I'll make a helicopter tonight! Once I got to class Natalie...(shown below with her big round carved platter ..detailing her recent 4 month trip to Asia) told us that the police had warned her to go home (she was out walking her dogs) because there was a cougar loose in the neighborhood. We found out the next day that they did find the big kitty and sadly, they shot him. So this is my attempt at the copter...I'm showing it upside down because that's how I had to build it...it's very fisher price, we'll see if it's still intact and made it through the week drying.

My Gardener Hard at Work...

Mygardener_3
I may have mentioned before that I had hopes of my thumbs turning green. My Mother is amazing with plants and flowers, I was hoping that gene would show itself by now...nope. Lucky for me my wonderful husband has suddenly turned into an urban farmer. Rich started all these plants from seed weeks ago and today started his garden in our yard. He had to move all my 'garden art' ...some rebar sculptures I made in college and that's one of my clay figures from the 90's - she looks very excited about the chives...I do get credit for those, they came from Mom's garden last year. They sat in a bag for 2 weeks before I put them in the ground...hearty little greens aren't they? This bird was hanging out with Rich, anyone know what kind he is? Hope these plants don't get to chilly tonight! It's supposed to be in the 70's mid week...

Truck of the week...

This is my "container" truck...I decided to try for a functional piece. We'll see
how the lid works once it's dry. You can see more photos on my flickr site.

Logo Sketches

Picture_4_2
I'm working with Executive Director Melanie Sobel to create a new logo for the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission. Melanie made some wonderful changes in her years at Chicago Animal Care & Control, implementing progressive programs that helped change their mission, philosophy and culture. Animal placement increased by nearly 150%, and animal euthanasia decreased by nearly 20%. She is hoping to bring some of these programs to MADACC. She is very dedicated and I'm honored to be working with her again on this project that we hope will give a more friendly and warm image to this institution which down the road we hope will adopt out it's strays. These were my initial designs...too whimsical and busy for a logo so I went back to the 'drawing board'. Stay tuned to see which direction we went.

Playing tourist in my own town...

1 3Three of my high school girl friends from Sparta came to visit over the weekend...it was fun catching up and hearing about life back home. We spent Saturday as tourists doing the Chicago Trolley Double Decker Bus Tour...a pretty good deal: For $25, you get a narrated historical tour of downtown with many optional stops at all the tourist spots. It was a gorgeous day and we were all enjoying the sunshine on our faces after such a long winter! I got some good photos that I hope to use in upcoming cityscape paintings...Chicago is such a beautiful city and I don't get down to the loop very often. Hard to believe I used to do it every day for work. You can see more  of my Chicago shots on my  Flickr page. Trio_2

Artist Found...

Picture_9
Back in 2005, Rich & I took a magical little 5 day trip to New York City. It was featured in my very first blog entry. What made it magical is that we let the trip take us, not really planning just having fun and unexpected adventures. Among them, renting and riding bicycles through Central Park, going to a Broadway Show with Half Price Tickets, going to see the band Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum ...my first experience in a non-smoking club..it was great! Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge...an awesome experience and my highlight, going to the DUMBO art event in Brooklyn where in addition to seeing and buying some fabulous art I also surprised one of my sculpture pals from college whose studio was listed in the program. We had not seen each other in 15 years. So after all that...the reason for this post and the image above: yesterday while perusing etsy in the shop local arena, I keyed in Brooklyn and came upon Faune Yerby, the artist who I had purchased this wonderful photo collage from. I didn't have any info on her or her full name so I was so really glad to find her...it is a small world. (Image: my kitchen sink/window sill art gallery, piece on the left by my friend Cathi Bouzide, on the right a Marquette I made for one of my clay sculptures).

Website Updates!

Picture_5

Several times of year I seriously think about hiring a web designer, but then time slips away and I just continue morphing this monster I created so many years ago! That's what I did this week:

  • I added my newly completed painting "65 South" to my front page. I love this painting and am now ready to let go of 12 Acres if the right buyer comes along.
  • Reworked many of my Custom Dog & Pet Portrait Order pages: Starting with the Sketch Process Page, I used Brutus as a case study.
  • Updated and simplified the Face Portrait and the Full Body Custom Canvas Painting order forms.I still have to figure out how to get a downloadable pdf on my site. The dangers of doing everything yourself. The other problem I can't update my leftside menu frame, it'sm making me crazy.
  • Uploaded my Mission Statement page...I recently completed a longer version for a potential licensing deal and have meant to post this on my website forever. I just want people to adopt and not buy animals, if they really new the statistics I think they would adopt. Speaking of: I heard Oprah is doing a show on puppy mills tomorrow...I am so happy about this, people need to know. She could in this one hour show change the lives of thousands of homeless pets (I'm hoping in addition to getting these mills shut down that they make the point to encourage people to go their local shelters to adopt instead of buying dogs). We'll see how it all plays out tomorrow.
  • Updated my Animal Inspiration page - added a few more recent photos to the very old ones.
  • Updated my listing to show recently SOLD pieces...always a joy to do!

Trucks & Planes

2383087687_8f71094fdf
Picture_2_2

I clicked a few photos of trucks that I'm working on at Lill Street. Sadly an hour before I took the wet clay photo I lost a cab from another truck, lopped right off onto the floor into many  pieces. Very frustrating...you just have to let go when it comes to clay. It's fragile and unpredictable but also really therapeutic and so much fun to play around with. This white truck is actually underglaze on bisqued (that means fired once) terra cotta ..it was bright orange before I slopped on the white.I do this so when I add the color I can get brighter hues.  It is going to be a milk truck..to go with the egg truck. The first one is my crazy version of a cement truck..that was my Monday night.

2383088979_ed34673702

And I got my plane back last week. I included strategically placed holes, the plan is to thread wire through and hang it from the ceiling. I also made clouds but they still need to be glazed.

Sunday...back track

Picture_8

I'm backtracking a bit with this post. On Sunday I had lunch with my friend
Johanna in China Town (dim sum!), got to see her ubercool new loft, then
stopped by her fiancee's studio (master furniture maker Mark Cwik) to get
some reclaimed lumber...if I can call it that? perhaps recycled, re-used?
They were scrap pieces he could not use. I can't wait to paint on them.
Here is a photo of one of his beautiful Bubinga Tables (no this is not the
kind of wood I'm painting on):
Picture_10_2
After picking up my boards I delivered my print (top image): "Dreaming
Uphill" to Woman Made Gallery for their April 12th Art Auction. Then
came home and got creative in the kitchen with a new recipe. I did a
Butternut Squash / Hazelnut Lasagne. The recipe was passed on to me
from my art pal & jeweler, Sara Lenart. You can find the recipe at
epicurious.com It was pretty tasty,I felt guilty not inviting anyone over
to share it with us!
