Hi Anne. I saw your call for help on Twitter. I'm a pug lover and a pug guardian and my three pugs are totally different in their looks and their personalities. As I look at your illustrations I think overall, you are missing the mischief that most pugs exude. With their dark muzzle it is hard to see their grin in photographs, but hard to miss their grins when you meet them in person. I think the third one down on the left margin is a really good likeness - captures their overall "court jester" personality. On full body studies, don't forget the tightly curlled tail. That will help distinguish from a Boxer, for example. I also think the bottom on the far right is good - love the forehead wrinkles. Some pug's wrinkles make them look more worried than others. But even worried pugs generally have smiles on.
Hope this helps!
Good luck, and when you have a finished product I'll check it out!

I too am finding it difficult to capture certain breeds..particularly this one! Since I'm not owned by a pug nor do I know any personally there isn't much advice I can give on the matter.. only the support of letting you know you're not alone in your struggle to capture the little boogers on canvas. :) I thought Kelly gave some great advice.
I thought there was a couple good illustrations up there..in the teal colored box sort of in the center and more toward the left. :D You're doing great!
